WHY ASHTANGA MYSORE

Breath-Focused: It’s breath-focused. When we regulate our breath, we regulate our nervous system and still the mind. It has built- in breathwork, known as pranayama, the 4th limb of Ashtanga Yoga. This is what makes the practice an internal one.

Fixed Sequence: The predictable sequence lets you learn poses at your own pace, offering modifications and allowing deeper connection. Teachers provide direct support without the need for constant cues. This also enables the teacher to support you better, whether by helping you remember, providing hands-on assistance when helpful, or exploring modifications that work for you. As you become familiar with the sequence, you can focus inward.

REPITITION

Repetition can be the greatest teacher. Repeating poses helps open and strengthen the body, creating new patterns for the mind and body, and space for mindfulness. This transforms the practice into a moving meditation.

Group Support: The best reason of all. It is a unique experience to practice quietly with a group of people focused on movement and breath. We show up to do our individual practices, but we are supported by one another. We face challenges together rather than avoiding them.

Consistency & Growth: You develop consistency and self-discipline. This method instills the importance of daily practice, also known as sadhana, to achieve personal growth and self-realization.

Global Community: You can practice Ashtanga Mysore anywhere and be welcomed by communities worldwide.

AN ASHTANGA YOGA MINDSET

You have to be willing to commit to doing the work and showing up for yourself, even if your mind or body resists—and it will. You can bet on it. However, showing up doesn’t mean being hard on yourself, pushing through injury, or ignoring your emotions. It simply means arriving and doing what you can— modifying if necessary—or practicing presence by observing the inner drama as it unfolds. We all experience these mental dramas. Often, you’ll strongly believe your reasons for not practicing are valid: you didn’t sleep enough, had an argument, feel anxious, or your body feels sore. While these feelings are valid, yoga teaches us to explore the complexity of our mind. The true depth of practice often emerges when you’re not in the mood. Instead of giving in to those feelings, stay open and curious, allowing the practice and the community to support you. Yoga can have many wonderful effects, but it can also bring up challenging emotions and thoughts. Rest assured, this is normal. Yoga is cleansing on both a physical and emotional level. Rather than running from your emotions or discomfort, work with them in your practice. You might gain valuable insights about yourself. Move, breathe and allow yourself to shift.
